All I Know Is Trill – Bun B lays it down for San Antone

Bun B and Kirko Bangz – The Trillest Tour 2014
White Rabbit – San Antonio, TX

Bun laying it down for San Antone.

“Classic” gets thrown around a lot but Bun B solo records are truly crafted in the traditions of classic gangsta rap. Rapid fire cymbals that accompany earth shattering bass and street culture imagery all come to mind. The lyricism and focus on rhymes is a refreshing exploration of rapping because a lot of modern hip-hop suffers from exhaustive attempts at trying to coin the next catch phrase. The Trill OG also seems immune to the effect EDM has had on the club and on the evolution of dance floor centric hip-hop.

Crowd showing their Houston love.

Houston rap icon Bun B packed the White Rabbit last Friday night. The puro San Antonio venue was practically sold out and a line down N St. Mary’s developed hours before Kirko Bangz was scheduled to appear. Much of crowd was younger than Bun B’s rap career, though it was a great cross section of San Antonio. The crowd included everyone from dudes with teardrop tattoos to kids with their boards and the ladies dressed for the club; oh and a ton of Spurs gear.

Kirko Bangz rapping over Lil KeKe’s “Southside”

One thing’s for sure: San Antonio’s got love for Kirko Bangz. Half way through his set when he performed “What Yo Name Iz” the crowd went crazy. The stage, stacked with his entourage and DJ, added more energy to the Rabbit by engaging the crowd and passing blunts. It’s a toss-up as far as what song got the most crowd reaction, but I think it might have been when Kirko Bangz asked the crowd who was from Houston and then dropped the beat from Lil KeKe’s “Southside”. To my surprise they went with it and Kirko began to flow over it along with the crowd.

UGK rap icon Bun B on the Trillest Tour

“UGK FOR LIFE” As the TX native came out moments after the local support, the roar of the crowd sounded like a stadium. It had that distant roar filled with screams and whistles you usually hear amongst a crowd of thousands of people. The DJs seamlessly transitioned between one another, quietly removing their laptops off the stand while it was replaced with Bun B’s DJ. After performing an array of solo & UGK hits, Bun B surprised the crowd by dropping “Big Pimpin”. He rapped his part of the smash hit as Bun B’s stage cohort filled in for the late Pimp C. It was awesome to see the overwhelmingly young crowd show love for a song that came out when they were no more than 5 years old. The following song was dedicated to Pimp C as the crowd was told to “Show me your H’s!”

The Trillest Tour was brought to San Antonio by Austin based promoter ScoreMore. According their website, ScoreMore began by “throwing concerts for the students, by the students”. They are also bringing two of the hottest names in music to San Antonio March 21 with Schoolboy Q & Isaiah Rashad. “Oxymoron” is one of the most critically acclaimed albums so far in 2014, making attending this Schoolboy Q show a must.  JMBLYA on May 3 at Whitewater Amphitheater is also a ScoreMore event and will feature Baauer x RL Grime, Chance the Rapper, Cashmere Cat and many others including A$AP Ferg.  If Bun B at the White Rabbit last Friday night is any indication of things to come, there’s a bright future ahead of music fans in San Antonio. 2014 is lookin’ trill
