One of the most important art historians of his generation, Josep Gudiol i Ricart was best known to English readers for his books on Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco, as well as Medieval Spanish painting. But Gudiol was much more than that. During the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939), he served as a “Monuments Man,” rescuing valuable works of art himself and organizing a campaign to preserve much of Catalonia’s threatened visual culture. Judith Sobré, Professor of Art History at The University of Texas at San Antonio, discusses Gudiol’s heroic preservation efforts often in the thick of fighting.
