Main Plaza is pleased to announce the 5th Annual “Mariachi Corazón de San Antonio” Festival, High School Group and All-Star Competition! The MCSA Festival was an amazing success last year and received The Grand Pinnacle Award by IFEA! The MCSA All-Star Ensemble showcased for the 2nd year in a row at the Kansas Mariachi Festival, their performance was stellar! Additionally, MCSA received a Pinnacle Award for the Best Educational Program for the 2nd year!

This year, the event will run from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and is FREE AND OPEN to the public. Guests can take in Mariachi music while enjoying local food vendors. We will also have performances by “Mariachi Fiesta de San Antonio” (Local professional Mariachi Group) and “Bailando Sin Fronteras” (Local Dance Troupe) throughout the event. At 9:00 p.m. guests are invited to stay and watch “San Antonio|The Saga”, an international award winning and captivating visual art projection that displays on the magnificent façade of San Fernando Cathedral.

For the past (4) years, MCSA has showcased local high schools in a competition for the title, “Best High School Level Mariachi in the San Antonio Area” and the cash prize of $1,500! This year will prove to be nothing less than spectacular as the prior winners, Brackenridge, Southwest, Brackenridge and again Brackenridge, will certainly be focused on the prize with competition at its best. Then add to the mix South San, Holmes, Southwest JV, Brackenridge JV, Thomas Jefferson, John Jay and Edison High Schools and look out!

This year will prove to be even more exceptional with the involvement of the 9th Annual Corazón de Memoria. During this year’s MCSA Festival we will be showcasing a 15ft Dia de los Muertos Altar by David Zamora Casas, a local artist, deeply influenced by la cultura. The public is invited to interact with the altar by placing photos or memorabilia of their dearly departed as remembrance.

Additionally, the The Final Acts Project, a theatre, creative arts and humanities based public health initiative, will collaborate with artist/filmmaker Laura Varela, artist David Zamora Casas and Main Plaza Conservancy in events that address legacy, planning, life and death. The programming includes community art workshops at the Bhil Haus Arts and the Haven for Hope. Guest speakers will better inform the public about this incredible collaboration.

Main Plaza Conservancy, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is dedicated to providing San Antonio and its visitors with the cultural and historical “heart of the city”; bringing awareness of family and community combined with history and heritage. All events are free and open to the public. Free weekend parking is available for Main Plaza visitors at one of two Frost Bank street-level parking lots Friday nights 5p.m. to midnight and Saturday & Sunday 8 a.m. to midnight.
