R Turn II: San Antonio Artist Preparators

R. Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition featuring new works from artist preparators, individuals who traditionally work behind the scenes installing artwork in museums, galleries, and other art venues. R Gallery brings their work to the forefront in R Turn II: San Antonio Artist Preparators (Our Turn), curated by Rigoberto Luna
opening II Friday, July 3, 2015.

The concept for R Turn arose out of the synergy between creation and preparation. Preparators take a hands-on approach to art appreciation, so it seems only natural that many preparators would be artists themselves. The first exhibition was held in 2002 at Kerry Seiffert Craftsman Furniture for one night only. The exhibition returns to form with several artists from the original exhibit and new names, all representing San Antonio art museums, and institutions, including Artpace, Briscoe Western Fine Art Museum, Evergreen Exhibitions, McNay Art Museum, Texas A&M University San Antonio Educational and Cultural Arts Center, and UTSA Art Collection. Works include mixed media, drawing, painting, woodwork, sculpture, video, writing, and performance.

The group show developed organically as many of the participating artists have worked together in the local art scene. “I think in our local community, there is a close working connection [among preparators] because we aren’t on the scale of a MoMa or the Met,” explains curator Rigoberto Luna. In describing the integral role of preparators in bringing an exhibition to fruition, Luna explains “You have registrars and curators and curatorial assistants but I think few people have as much access and more of a working relationship with the artists than the preparator on a lot of levels.”

Artists in the exhibition include Nate Cassie, Waldo Castro, Patric Cormier, Chad Dawkins, Joe De La Cruz, Abigail Entsminger, Tim Foerster, Daniel Guerrero, Shane Heinemeier, Raygun Johns, Pedro Luera, Ruben Luna, Ben Mata, Oscar Palacios, Mario Perez, Ed Saavedra, Kerry Seiffert, Ethel Shipton, Sid St. Onge, Alison Ward, and Michael Witzel

Please join R Gallery at the opening reception on First Friday, July 3, from 6pm to 11pm, featuring live music Sid St Onge and Chandalero and His Carmelita. Participating artists will be in attendance.

Sponsors include World Audio and Lights, Soah Tequila, Lonestar Beer, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Studio One Zero 3 and Ministry of Nightlife.

R Gallery is open by appointment only and is located at 725 S. Presa in the historic Lavaca district in San Antonio. Founded in 2011, the gallery is host to art exhibitions and events spotlighting local and national visual artists, DJ’s and live music acts.
