Lone Star Brewery

IMHO, a huge difference between Untapped Festival over other “Beer Fests” is their focus on high quality musical entertainment and as close to an all-local, all-craft beer selection as possible.

I was lucky enough to be invited to Untapped Houston earlier this year, set on the lush lawn of downtown’s Discovery Green, and had an amazing experience from entry to end. There weren’t super long lines at the beer booths, no chanclas were thrown, and there was plenty of space in between booth aisles and many areas to breathe and relax.  Twin Shadow and Cold War Kids rocked as headliners, plus the festival made sure to include local talent at every stop. The food was a little out of the way, but I’m sure at the ginormously spread out Lone Star Brewery, this won’t be a problem.

Look for me at the fest and be sure to snap a selfie with me or at least give a hi-five!

Here are some #purotips for a most excellent experience:

#PuroTip 1: I highly recommend purchasing tickets at the Beer Package level or above. This includes a sheet of (12) 2 oz samples, an Untapped cup and you can purchase an additional sheet for only $5.

#PuroTip 2: Untapped includes a map and a brewery list so you can check out your favorite (or most potent) beers first. The more popular beers (seasonals, higher ABV’s) usually run out first so head to those booths as soon as you can. There’s usually 2-3 different styles of one brewer’s beer so while you’re there get two samples (if the beertenders allow).

The beer list is AWESOME. For a complete list of breweries go to: Untapped San Antonio Brew List.

#PuroTip 3: Eat a good breakfast and eat while you’re there. Drinking on an empty stomach isn’t good for anyone. Luckily for y’all, Untapped San Antonio will have some of the best local food vendors available to choose from. I don’t know if there will be pretzels but I did see a guy at Untapped Houston with a homemade pretzel necklace (smart, not sure if acceptable).

#PuroTip 4: Pace yourself. These are 2 oz samples but those can rack up quickly (especially if you know the people serving the beer). PLUS you can still purchase FULL beers if you really fell in love with one. And since this is an all ages event, there will probably kiddos there so try not to fall on top of one of them.

#PuroTip 5: In case you hadn’t heard the news, we have UBER back in San Antonio. Probably a good idea to get a designated driver if you can’t Uber. The weather is supposed to be in the 60’s so ride your bike or walk but be sure to dress in LAYERS chancludos. You can use my discount code if ya want, hg9no

#PuroTip 6: Check out the music schedule so you don’t miss your favorite bands while waiting in line for your favorite beers.

The exciting music lineup includes: Metric, Tokyo Police Club, GZA, Saint Motel, and more.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE that Untapped San Antonio has mixed in some local sounds with Nina Diaz (of Girl in a Coma), Mariachi  Nuevo Estilo, King Pelican (great surf rock), Ellis Redon, and Los Callejeros de San Anto (side project of Piñata Protest’s Alvaro del Norte and recent Noche de Los Muertos fame).

Metric hasn’t been to San Antonio since April of 2013 but since that time they’ve released their latest album “Pagans in Vegas.” Frontwoman Emily Haines is sure to showcase the fruits of her recent solitary journey live on stage. Check out their video for The Governess (that just came out today).

I can’t wait to see The GZA at the fest. If you don’t know, he’s an original member of Wu-Tang Clan and he ain’t nothing to f*ck with.

Tokyo Police Club and Saint Motel are sure to get you dancing so you may want to finish your beers before enjoying these sets.
