Yo Digo Baila, Tu Dices Dance

Yo Digo Baila, Tu Dices Dance

Camilo Lara’s Mexican Institute of Sound proves one does not have to completely abandon the past to move forward. MIS makes traditional rhythms and instrumentation feel as if I’m hearing them for the first time. The horns and conga with latin syncopations fed through various filters brings the streets of Mexico City into the discotheque. MIS shares a landscape with other electronic / world music purveyors such as Basement Jaxx or Nicolas Jaar by pulling together elements from musical styles not normally associated with one another. 8bit loops, non-traditional percussive sounds and samples form a housey mix that’s both fun and accessible, yet seriously complex.

I admit, I was unfamiliar with Mexican Institute of Sound until recently, BUT precisely the second MIS hit my ear drums, my ears perked up like: “WTF is that!” which, to me, is the most exciting part of discovering new music. The fact something can immediately grab you both emotionally and intellectually without having to do conceptual back-flips to appreciate it, is simply amazing. You may recognize some Mexican Institute of Sound from TV shows, background music of commercials and  in video games like GTA5 and FIFA 2010. Camilo Lara has toured the world, including performances at Coachella and Lollapalooza, is a Grammy award winning producer  and all around badass.

This Saturday, The Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center is hosting an event called “WestFest” (not to be confused or associated with other WestFests from around the globe). Beginning at 10am, WestFest will kick off the official beginning of summer with art, music, food and dance for the entire family. The focus shifts at 6pm to the inside of the theater for a Gala Dinner that includes a silent auction. The outdoor concert portion runs from 8pm to 11pm and is headlined by Mexican Institute of Sound. Tickets are $15 presale and $20 at the door for the concert.

I’ll be in attendance taking pictures (trying to get an interview) and dancing and eating and having a good a time. Keep your eye on for more coverage and any surprises chica might have for us. SEE YOU THERE!
